I want to know what a good lure is for smallmouth bass in a muddy/ stained water river( the bass ranging from 6 oz. to 2 lbs at most.

I would try some crankbait, rooster tail in dark color. Lures that make noise since it is muddy/stained.

I use a Rebel teeny wee crawfish……..works great

  • hill bill y:

    spinnerbait

    Hill billy is “right on”.

Small Spinnerbait’s, (or any type of blade-bait) in 1/8-1/16 OZ would be excellent. Make sure to get “gold” blades and chartreuse skirt’s.

In deeper water (over 3 FT) a Rapala shallow Shad Rap would be good.

And you can’t beat a twin-tailed, curly-tailed grub in crawdad colors! (Use a 1/8 OZ Jighead for waters shallower than 8 FT; for water’s deeper than 8 FT try a 1/4 OZ).

    Hope this helps? Good luck!

As unhelpful as this sounds, whatever they’re hitting on is the best lure. That being said, I’d start with the following on my rods:

Soft plastic lizard or tube jig, in a brown, red, or green color.
Shad rap or Bomber A crankbait, in a green/black color

    Dark spinnerbait or chatterbait

A topwater plug in the same color scheme as the crankbait if you’re fishing at dawn or dusk.

Why don’t you just use live bait?

My beef will artificial bait is that I feel when a bass bites it he can tell it’s fake. Then they won’t bite it again.

Live bait swim around, therefore it’s easier for the fish to grab it. Even if it nibbles it knows it’s real.

    Use minnows or crawdads.

Typically bright topwaters or flashy bright spinners like mepps Aglias will work the best. I caught 62 smallmouth last Thursday in less than 2 hours all on a Mepps #4 Aglia on the St. Croix river by my house. They were like piranha down there.
